Quick Start Guide for AE - Wrapping keywords

To wrap keywords with the match of your choice:

First, choose match or combination of matches you want. In the image below we click on “Broad & phrase” match button. The entire column of AdGroup 5 (words on finger picking) will be wrapped with broad and phrase match and copied for pasting. The next step is just to press [ctrl-tab] to switch to Google Adwords for pasting.

In Google Adwords’ Add Keywords or Edit Keywords text box, just press [ctrl]-v. All the copied keywords will be pasted as board match and phrase match into the text box. Just click the “save” button and it is done.

A Proper Split Test

Do you really think you know how to do a proper ads split test? You may be surprise to find out that you have been using a wrong method…

If you don’t know what split test is…
Split test is a process to test the effectiveness of two or more Ad copies or, in another term, creatives. It is usually measured in term of click through rate (CTR). When we do a split test, we want to find out which Ads are more effective in generating click.

Setting:

First step of split test is to tick off (in another words, stop running) Seach network and Content network. Leave only Google search in Campaign settings.

Generally, the CTRs of an Ad in Google search and Search network are quite different. Comparing CTRs of two Ads with one in Google search and another in Google+Network search are like comparing apple with orange. When we add a new ad, this ad will display instantly for Google Search but not Search Network. Google team will take a while to review the new ad before approving it to be displayed in Search Network. So if we compare the CTRs of an old ad (displayed in both Google Search & Search Network) with a new ad (displayed only in Google search), we will get a distorted picture of comparison.

We can wait until the new ad is displayed in Search Network to do the comparison, but we don’t know the exact date when the new ad started to be displayed in Search Network. So the logical method is to deactivate the old ad from displaying in Search Network for a fair comparison.

Second, you tick of Ad rotation and, therefore, NOT to show better ads more often.

Unit of comparison:

CTR, instead of number of clicks, should be the comparison factor. But how many clicks should be sufficient for a fair comparinson of CTR? This is from the thread by jtara from the Google Groups Adwords Help forum.

30 clicks is a good rule of thumb. A more accurate way is to use statistical confidence. There’s a handy statistical confidence calculator for AdWords here;

You enter the # of clicks and CTR for each of the two ads, and it will calculate a confidence level.

Comparing CTR:

After a few days (it really depends on the click popularity of your ads and keywords.) we may start comparing your newly create ads and old ads. From the image below, we should choose a date after the new ads were created. We will have a fair comparison of the effectiveness of the ads.

Quick Start Guide for AE

This is the quick start step-by-step guide for AE. It shows you the fastest way to get your keywords grouped, processed and wrapped for your Adwords campaign using AE.

Step1:
Copy keywords from Google Adwords Keyword Tool. After highlighting the keywords, you can either right click to trigger the menu and click “Copy” or simply press [ctrl-c]

Step2:
Switch to AE beta by pressing Alt-Tab key. Press the “Paste New KWs” button as indicated in the picture. The copied keywords will be pasted at the New Keywords column.

Step 3:
1. Click on “Move keywords” button. A dialog box will appear and ask you to specify range.
2. Select the cells containing keywords that you want (to create a new adgroup) by click and drag.
3. Select non adjacent cells by pressing [ctrl] and click on those cells.
4. Press the “ok” button in the dialog box.

Step 4:
A new dialog box will appear requesting you to specify the 1st cell of destination range for your selected keywords. You will choose a cell and press “ok” button of the dialog box.

Come to think of it…here is the quickest way to use AE to sort and group your keywords into various AdGroup.

Quick keyword research

When we go through a list of keywords for grouping, we may find some unfamiliar keywords. What are the meanings of these keywords? For proper grouping of keywords we must know the true meanings of these keywords.

We google these keywords to check the search results. So, we open a new window, click to google, enter the keyword into the search box and hit Google Search button. Well, there is a much quicker way to do it.

This is how we can do such search in a much quicker manner:

Step 1:
Highlight the keyword. From the list of keywords, highlight the unfamiliar keyword that you want to find out its meaning. (You can get such list of related keywords from Google Adwords Keyword Tool.)

Step 2:
Right click and select “Search Web for…”

A new tab appears at the top.

Step 3:
Click the new tab for the search results.

First thing first, such convenience is only available to Firefox. You cannot use Internet Explore for such shortcut. You can download Firefox by clicking on the icon “Get Firefox with Google Toolbar” at the right sitebar.

Setting up a web site in 2 hours

When I started my online venture I tried few html editors like Microsoft FrontPage and Eversoft 1stPage. It took me few weeks just to setup a not-so-decent web site. It was not well designed at all. The look and feel was amateur. The structure was not optimized for search engine ranking. It was difficult to update. After setting it up, I lost energy to write content and design my business process.

Free Scripts for Content Management System…

It took me about half a year to realize that there are something called “free script” and “free content management system” (CMS) on the internet. First thing first, there are abundant of free and wonderful scripts available on the net due to Open Source Movement. I can simply install these scripts in my web hosting, with few clicks here and there, and the entire infrastructure of my web site is constructed. I just need to write and post my content, i.e. articles, to my web hosting. All of these free scripts come with free templates of various designs with different look and feel for your web site.
